New Jersey Institute of Technology’s new Oak Hall represents a major investment in the university’s continued campus growth and student housing capacity. Located on Summit Street in Newark, the new 15-story, 191,000-square-foot residence hall will provide 453 beds across 154 apartment-style units, more than doubling the capacity of the previous Oak Hall facility.
Designed to support NJIT’s evolution into a more residential, nationally competitive university, the project will offer modern living environments for students in two- and four-person apartments complete with kitchens, living rooms, and bathrooms. The building will also include resident assistant units and a range of student-focused common spaces, including study lounges, a game room, conference rooms, and laundry facilities.
The new Oak Hall is being delivered through a design-build approach, with Terminal Construction serving as general contractor and Niles Bolton Associates and Netta Architects providing architectural design services. The project replaces the existing Oak Hall, an older 1913 industrial building that was converted into student housing in 1984, with a new high-rise residence hall designed to better meet NJIT’s long-term housing demand.
When complete, the new Oak Hall will add 275 beds to NJIT’s 48-acre campus and play an important role in supporting projected enrollment growth, modernizing the student experience, and strengthening the university’s residential campus environment. The project is planned to open in 2027.
